What Is a Panini?

The word panini is the plural of panino in Italian. In the United States, the term is used singularly to refer to sandwiches that are roasted between two hot plates. As a result, the bread is deliciously crunchy on the outside, and the filling is heated simultaneously from both sides.

It is customary to make it with cheese so that it melts and blends with the rest of ingredients inside when the heat and weight of the plate are applied. It is also usual to spread the bread with different sauces, and for the filling ingredients to have several layers combining textures and flavors.

How Do You Prepare a Panini?

The process is as simple as making a sandwich, with an added step to toast it. As far as the type of bread, it is your choice. You can either use two slices of square bread or a longitudinally cut small baguette. Then, spread the outer face of each side with oil or butter, fill up with your favorite ingredients and cover. Heat the grill, place the panini in it, close the top lid and wait for 3 to 6 minutes, depending on the desired toastiness.

What Kind of Bread Is Used for Paninis?
How to make a panini

Almost any bread is good to make paninis, preferably those of consistent crumb since you want to be able to cut the slices to adapt to each preparation. Typical breadcrumbs, baguettes, home-made hamburger buns, and quality mold loaves of bread work. Muffins also work wonderfully, and focaccia is absolutely perfect. But regular supermarket bread has not enough consistency.

What Filling Do I Put in My Panini?

The variety is huge! Starting with what goes on the bread, the sauces you can spread on range from mustard in its different varieties to mayonnaise or olive oil. Cheeses of any kind are welcome, as well as cold meats -roast beef is just fantastic- and slices of meat from chicken, turkey, or beef. They can also be typically stuffed with tuna. The world of pickles is also an ally of paninis, including pickled cucumbers, olives, and capers!
