Keep Your Kitchen Fresh With Orange Peels
Most people consider orange peels as kitchen waste, but before you toss them into your compost bin or garbage disposal, there are actually a few methods of getting a little more life out of the organic material. Orange peels contain natural oils that have many household applications and they can actually be used to help keep your kitchen appliances fresh and clean.
Using Orange Peels To Clean Your Kitchen Appliances
Add Some Zesty Freshness To Your Fridge
First, create a collection of orange peels and store them in your refrigerator to keep them fresh. Once you have a good pile, put them in an oven at 200 degrees for 2-3 hours until they are totally dehydrated. Then use a food processor to grind them into a powder. This fresh-smelling powder can be mixed with baking soda and placed in the back of the fridge to keep the interior smelling great!
Add A Sparkling Shine To Your Appliances
The oils concentrated in orange peels is a fantastic cleaning agent, and it can be used to bring a sparkling shine to your stainless steel appliances. Use fresh orange peel directly on the surfaces of your appliances to rub away grease and fingerprints.
Make Your Disposal Smell Better
It’s not surprising that a garbage disposal can start to have a smell, especially in the summer months. However, you can give your unit a fresh scent by periodically processing citrus peels through it. It is a good idea to add some ice cubes as well to prevent blockages.
Eliminate Odors From Your Microwave
Orange peels can also be used to eliminate unpleasant odors in a microwave oven. First, fill a bowl with a small amount of water and a good handful of orange peels. Then, place it in the microwave and heat it on high for 60 seconds. When you remove the bowl, the odor will be gone with it.
Create Your Own Appliance Cleaner
For an effective and cheap kitchen cleaner alternative, you can simply make your own with discarded orange peels. Fill a bowl with orange peels and add white vinegar until all of the peels are covered. Allow this mixture to infuse for a week or so and then strain out the orange peels. The remaining liquid is a strong and safe cleaning solution.
Don’t waste your orange peels! Use them to freshen up your kitchen with a zesty, citrus scent!
