Avoid ruining your fish
Frozen fish can be spoiled if the fish is thawed during transport and left at warm temperatures for too long. We should not buy frozen fish if the package is open, broken or crushed at the edges. Ideally, we will choose the frozen fish packages closest to the base and bottom of the supermarket freezer. You should also take into consideration that it is better to avoid packages with signs of frost or ice crystals, which may mean that the fish has been stored for a long time or has been thawed and refrozen.
In the freezer
Regarding the expiration date of frozen fish, this is valid if we are storing it correctly in a powerful freezer. A 1-star freezer is not suitable for freezing food and a 2-star freezer does not serve to eliminate “Anisakis”, a parasite. Ideally, thaw the fish by leaving them in the refrigerator the night before.
Essential nutrients
Fish and seafood contain high-quality proteins and other essential nutrients (think of Omega 3 fatty acids) and are an important part of a healthy diet. In fact, a balanced diet that includes a variety of fish can contribute to heart health and help in the growth and development of children. However, as with any type of food, it is important to handle fish and shellfish safely to reduce the risk of foodborne illness, so-called food poisoning.
Maintain fish quality
Salmon and tuna, which are fatty fish should be kept in the freezer for no more than 2 or 3 months to maintain quality. On the other hand, lean fish, like catfish, mahi-mahi, or cod can be kept in the freezer for up to 5 or 6 months.
