Here are a couple possible solutions if your ice maker is producing smelly or bad tasting ice cubes. There can be many reasons this is happening let us discuss a few and how you can easily correct the problem.

Is it the water?

Sometimes the city you live in may have water that is full of algae, impurities, salt, chemicals, mineral and sulfur. If this is the case you may need to replace regularly your filtration system. The water filtration system should be replaced every six months or as recommended by the manufacturer. Also, depending on how much you and your family use these features your may need to consider replacing it with more frequency.  This way you can avoid the poor taste and odor in the ice cubes.

Is it the ice bin?

Make sure to clean out the ice maker container ever so often, never washing your ice making tray will spoil your ice because of lack of cleaning. Read the instruction manual to find out where the ice bin is located, then take the time to clean out the ice compartments with a damp cloth.

Is it the freezer?

We tend to pay less attention to the freezer upkeep since everything is frozen. Just like the refrigerator, the smells of the food you keep inside your freezer may also affect your ice.  Check your refrigerator owner’s manual for specific instructions related to cleaning it, this way you ensure the type of  cleaning solutions or chemicals you may use without causing any damage. Remember that ice cubes may absorb odors from sitting too long in your freezer with poorly sealed foods and containers or any spilled liquids,. We recommend every time you clean out your freezer to start it with a fresh new batch of ice.

Is it the hose?

The water hose could be damaged, clogged or of low quality. These can be easily replaced by buying a new one at a homeware goods store. Refer back to the manual to know which kind to buy and how to replace it.

We hope these 4 guidelines may help you discover why your ice machine is troubleshooting. If you have another tip to keeping the ice fresh in the freezer share it with us in the comments!
