Choosing A Vacuum by Style
The best vacuum is the one that works for the cleaning you need to do. If you have a lot of carpeting, then an upright vacuum, will probably be the best. However, if you live in a home with many stairs and hardwood, laminate, or tile floors, then a canister model may be better. Stick and hand-held vacuum cleaners are great for lighter tasks that need a quick clean. For those that need a little extra help, a robotic unit could be an option. Central vacuums are fantastic if can commit to installing one in your home.
Models of Vacuum Cleaners
Canister Vacuum Cleaner
The canister vacuum cleaner is ideal for cleaning hard-surface floors, curtains, stairs, furniture upholstery, and in difficult to reach spaces. This type of unit is usually quieter, and the power head makes it easier to control. The only downside of this type of cleaner is that it can be more difficult to store with the addition of the hose and wand.
Stick Vacuum Cleaner
Similar to the upright model, a stick vacuum has a large body and handle, as well as a powerhead attached to the bottom. These are typically battery-powered, lightweight, and convenient for a quick clean.
Unfortunately, they typically do not perform as well as a full-size vacuum, but they are much more compact and easier to maneuver. The capacity of its container is much smaller, so it may not be a total replacement for a conventional vacuum cleaner.
Upright Vacuum Cleaner
An upright cleaner is a less expensive option compared to a canister vacuum and is capable of cleaning a wider area at once. These are ideal for cleaning carpets and are easy to store due to their design.
However, the weight of the device makes them more difficult to control. They are also typically a noisier model than other designs.
