Is a blender as useful as a food processor?

If you are a practical person or someone who doesn´t want to spend money on luxuries, then this information might be useful. Many recipes use a food processor, but if you cannot afford it, then use your blender. A blender can actually be used in most recipes. Since blenders have a different way of working, it’s important to know how to manage the ingredients in the recipe correctly.

The first thing to know is whether the blender has a sharp blade and is strong. That sounds confusing, but there are some instances when you can use the blender instead of the food processor and there are few times when you cannot use it.

Use the blender for the following recipes without any problem:

  • making salad dressings
  • making hummus
  • gravies and saucesBlender instead of processor
  • making pestos
  • pureeing soups

Do not use the blender in the following cases:

  • soft veggies that need to stay solid will be very difficult to control
  • for recipes where you need to shred carrots or potatoes
  • do not blend anything while it is hot
  • very firm foods, especially nuts, won’t chop in a blender, use a cutting board instead

Recommendations:

  • Do not fill up your blender too high because it might splatter all over the kitchen and you could get burned.
  • Both the food processor and the blender need a certain amount of liquid.  If you use a good quantity of liquid in them then they will work well.  If the blade of your blender seems to be spinning but the food keeps moving to the sides of the blender and not mixing well, then it needs more liquid.
  • The difference between a food processor and a blender is the shape. Food and liquids tend to spread out more evenly in the processor.
  • Try to get a  blender with a wider base and stronger blade, so you can use it for food recipes as well as drinks.
  • Use several small batches instead of a full batch if you are using the blender. Use 1/4 of the ingredients to start. Once you have it all chopped, then continue with the second batch. In this way, you will get an even consistency throughout.
