What to Expect from a “Smart Fridge”
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a very current trend. The result of this trend is the intelligent home, in which it is possible to control the appliances through the network in order to make optimal consumption decisions.
Smart Refrigerators
Refrigerators are becoming “smart”. The new models launched recently work with applications that allow users to search recipes, make a shopping list, and manage the expiry date of foods such as yogurt and milk. The South Korean electronics company Samsung manufactured a new fridge that has a 10-inch touch screen that can be used with Wi-Fi. The touch screen connects to the Internet and lets users shop straight from their fridge. The screen allows users to keep up with the news, weather, and even Twitter just by looking at the door of the refrigerator. You can also replace hand-written calendars with the integration of Google Calendar and show photo slideshows. Shopping lists can be created using Evernote, which syncs with advanced phones, and recipes can be found in Epicurious. For example, you can say, “I have these ingredients in the fridge. What can I cook?” and it will show you recipes you can do.
So, why would I need a smart fridge?
- You can create shopping lists digitally or ask about new recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks with the products that are inside the appliance.
- You save on light costs, since it is not necessary to open the refrigerator to check product by product, and thanks to the cameras, you can see them through your mobile device.
- The configuration is easy to use, and as consumers, we have perpetual connectivity.
- The refrigerator is now another access point without having to walk around with a tablet or have a cell phone close to where you’re cooking.
