When there is a problem with one of your appliances, you need to determine whether it is better to repair or replace it. If you have plans on staying in your home for at least 10 years, and you have an old appliance with issues, it is usually a better idea to upgrade to a more energy efficient appliance.

However, if the appliance is not that old, then the decision to repair or replace can be a little more difficult.

When the budget is tight, the first instinct for most will be to repair the machine. However, this may actually be the more expensive option in the long run.

The first thing to determine when something goes wrong with an appliance is to figure out if it is actually broken. Check these potential issues first:

• No circuits or fuses have been blown.
• The machine has a proper connection to its power supply.
• The floor or footing of the machine is level. This can prevent some machine from turning on.
• There are no blockages in the vents or filters.

Check the Warranty

If there is still a problem, it is wise to check the warranty. If it is still covered under the warranty, this could be the answer to replacement or repair.

Is It Obsolete?

All appliances have an average lifespan, so it is important to consider how far down the road your machine has gone. If it should still have many more years of use left in it, then it may be worth repairing. If it is close to the end, then it may be better to replace it.

The most important thing is to diagnose the problem and verify if the appliance actually needs repairs. Once the problem has been determined, the right course of action will present itself.
