If your refrigerator works but the freezer isn’t freezing, there are several possible causes of this problem. To troubleshoot and fix this issue, start by checking the temperature settings to make sure that the freezer isn’t just set too low to be effective. You can also check your freezer temperature with a thermometer to make sure it is 0 degrees Fahrenheit or -18 degrees Celsius. If both of these checks pass, there are several other potential problems you might have.

Reasons Why One Works and the Other Doesn’t

A broken freezer can become an expensive issue if not attended.

It sounds like the freezer is not getting cold enough. There are a few possible reasons for this. First, it could be that your power or breaker went out and the refrigerator needs to be restarted. Second, it could be that the freezer was working fine before, and now there is something clogging the vents in the back of the freezer (maybe ice cream!). Third, it could be that you need to replace your defrost timer on your refrigerator. You may have too much frost build-up due to improper defrosting. You should clean the coils and check if they are frozen with an ice pick. If they’re not frozen, then you need a new defrost timer. If they’re iced over, then you’ll want to call a professional technician who can thaw them out and fix any problems with your system.

More Possible Repairs

Check the Power to the Unit: Make sure it is plugged in and turned on. If the freezer is working on a separate circuit, make sure that circuit is properly grounded and has power. Also, check for tripped breakers or blown fuses.

Check the Defrost Cycle: The defrost cycle should turn off automatically after six hours of operation if not disturbed during that time. The defrost timer could be dirty or faulty, causing it to malfunction. Clean or replace with a new timer as needed.

Check for Clogged Condenser Coils: The ice inside your freezer can freeze against the condenser coils and block airflow from the outside, preventing them from cooling your food enough to prevent freezing. To fix this issue, remove any excess frost/ice build-up on the condenser coils. With your door open, run water over the condensers while they are running to help clear out any debris. You may need to use a hair dryer or other heat source to help remove stubborn debris.
