Common Appliance Mistakes That Can Cause Expensive Repairs
Part 3 – Washers and Dryers
There are many simple tricks to keeping your washer and dryer working for years.
Empty Your Pockets
It is always important to make sure that there is nothing left in the pockets of your clothes that could damage the machines during a load of laundry. Coins, keys and other bits of metal can get caught during a cycle and cause damage to the components of the machine. Even zippers should always be zipped to prevent potential damage.
Replace Hoses
Over time, the hoses in a washing machine can become brittle, which could lead to a leak or break in the line. Make sure that they are replaced once every 4 to 5 years.
Too Much Detergent
Never use too much laundry detergent during a load of laundry. Not only can this cause damage to your clothes, but it can also damage the control panel of the washing machine. Always measure your laundry detergent to ensure that you use the correct amount.
Using the Wrong Soap
If you run out of laundry detergent, don’t substitute with dishwasher detergent or other types of soap. This can cause damage to the machine.
Overloaded Machines
Never put too many clothes into a washer or dryer. This can cause damage to the machine’s bearings and suspension. Always follow the recommendations of the machine’s load capacity.
Never Cleaning The Lint Trap
It is important to clean the lint trap before every load of clothes in your dryer. Failing to do this can damage the dryer’s performance and cause safety issues.
Failing to Clean the Washer
Over time, hair, lint and other debris build up in the washing machine. This can lead to blockages and other issues that could damage the machine. Run a cleaning cycle once in a while and make sure there isn’t a build up of debris.
Keeping Wet Clothes in the Washer
You should always remove wet clothes from a washing machine immediately after a cycle. Failing to do so can lead to mold, mildew and rust issues.
