Tips to keep lettuce fresh and crisp in the fridge
Surely you buy lettuce once or twice a week, therefore, by not consuming it immediately, the leaves of the lettuce darken quickly and become “ugly” (the same happens with bananas).
Simple steps to avoid having to throw away the lettuce you have not consumed quickly
- You must wash the leaves thoroughly, one by one to be able to remove the possible remains of dirt. It is also advisable to disinfect them with a few drops of bleach for food use and rinse well.
- You must dry the leaves of the lettuce very well. If you use a container or centrifuge utensil, it will be much easier and faster.
- Once dry, put them in a container placing a paper towel between the leaves. This will absorb moisture that can spoil the appearance of the lettuce. You should know that one of the best tricks to keep the lettuce longer is to keep the leaves uncut, that is whole.
- Introduce the container with the lettuce inside the refrigerator. It is advisable that you insert it in the drawers fitted for vegetables that refrigerators usually have. It is the area of the fridge that is less cold and that adapts better for lasting conservation.
- If for some reason you need to keep cut lettuce or chopped lettuce, we recommend that you cut it with a ceramic or plastic knife. Avoid using a conventional steel knife to cut it. Thus you delay much more the oxidation of this vegetable whose scientific name is Lactuca sativa.
- Some vegetables such as lettuce, carrots or beets have in common that they grow in contact with the earth. This means that they can have certain contaminants, insects or dirt because before they are eaten, they do not undergo any cooking to eliminate them.
It is advised that fresh foods are kept in the refrigerator to prevent possible pathogens from multiplying.
