This guide is intended to help you determine the cause of issues with your fridge. Follow the symptoms and recommendations to try and fix the issue before it becomes worse.
Identifying Common Refrigerator Problems
Interior Light Does Not Turn On
- Replace or check the light bulb.
- If the problem persists, check if the door switch is functioning.
Fridge Does Function
If your fridge is not functioning at all, there is likely a power problem.
- First, check to see that the fridge is properly connected to its power source.
- If it is, test the outlet for electricity.
- If there is no power, check to see if a fuse has been blown or flipped.
- Check to see if there is any damage to the electrical lines.
The Fridge Does Not Cool, But The Light Turns On
- Verify the level of the temperature setting.
- Make sure that the condenser coils are clean of grime.
- Remove the appliance from its power source. After two hours, plug it back in. If it starts to run, then the compressor may be overheating.
- Make sure that there is space between the fridge and the wall to allow for air flow.
- If the problem continues, test the temperature control, evaporator fan, defrost timer, compressor relay, motor, and overload protector.
Refrigerator Is Insufficiently Cold
- Check the rubber seals around the doors.
- Clean the condenser coils to be free of grime.
- Verify the level of the temperature setting.
- Check the temperature control.
- Check for obstructions in the vents.
- Check for obstructions in the drain tube or for potential leaks in the system.
- Test other components of the fridge for malfunction.
The Fridge Makes Loud Noises
- Slight sounds from the defrost heater are normal on frost-free fridges.
- Make sure that the fridge is level.
- Empty the drain pan.
- Check for malfunction in any of the fridge’s fans.
