3 Types of Fridges

Here is a helpful breakdown of the three main types of fridges available on the market.

Refrigerator Styles

Top-Freezer

Top-freezerThe most traditional and common style of refrigerator is a fridge with the freezer on top. The freezer usually takes up about 1/3 of the appliance, with the other 2/3s below it for fresh food storage.

AdvantagesCommon design. Less expensive than other models.

DisadvantagesFreezer on top may be more difficult to reach for children or short adults. Needs adequate space to allow the doors to open completely.

Bottom-Freezer

Bottom-freezerThis style of refrigerator has the freezer on the bottom of the appliance. The freezer usually pulls out like a drawer and the fresh food compartment opens like a traditional fridge.

AdvantagesProvides easier access to the fresh food section of the fridge. More energy efficient freezer.

Disadvantages: Difficult to place in a kitchen due to the mixed style of opening doors.

Side-By-Side

Side-By-SideIn this style of fridge, the freezer and fresh food compartments are beside each other. They are nearly equal in size, with usually a little more room in the refrigerator section of the appliance. They offer a variety of options for organization and the doors only need so much space to swing open.

Advantages: Convenient access to both the fridge and freezer sections of the appliance. They are ideal for narrow kitchens as they do not require as much space to open the doors.

DisadvantagesIt is more difficult to fit wider dishes in the fridge and there is usually less overall fresh food storage space than other models. Typically, the most expensive style of fridge.
