When the food in the refrigerator freezes

Sometimes, your refrigerators food may freeze or become too cold when the refrigerator should only keep it fresh. If the food in the refrigerator freezes, this means that the appliance is too cold. There are two main causes why a refrigerator, instead of keeping your food fresh, will cause it to freeze.

Reasons why the refrigerator might be too coldwhen the refrigerator freezes food

  • The ventilation hole

On the back of the models of most refrigerators, there is a ventilation hole where cold air comes out to keep all food fresh. If the food is kept very close to this ventilation, this can expose them to very cold temperature, so they will finally freeze. Keep your refrigerator full for maximum ventilation efficiency, but also keep food at least 5 inches away from the vent to prevent freezing.

  • Internal thermostat

The refrigerators internal thermostat may break and cause the food in the refrigerator to freeze. The right refrigerator temperature is anywhere below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, but above freezing water, that is 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The refrigerator has an internal thermostat that automatically keeps the appliance at the proper temperature. If the refrigerator thermostat breaks or is set to keep the refrigerator at the wrong temperature, it can make the refrigerator too cold. Thermostats can be reset manually, however, you may have to replace it if it is set in what appears to be an adequate temperature, but the food continues to freeze.

Problems with food

Most refrigerated foods, such as beverages, dairy products, and leftovers, can be easily frozen in the refrigerator and defrosted without problems if the refrigerator freezes food. However, foods such as fruits and vegetables may lose their texture, become soft or spongy, and spoil more easily if they are frozen or semi-frozen and then thawed.
