A Simple Guide To Composting!
Recently, we discussed the importance of reducing household trash. An extremely effective method of doing this is by installing a garbage disposal unit or using a trash compactor. However, you can also recycle a lot of those materials by learning about composting.
What is Compost?
Compost is the result of a natural process that happens to organic matter. Exposed to air and water, microorganisms and other natural elements break down food waste and other organic matter to create compost, a nutrient-rich material that is great for gardening.
How To Make Compost
The first step to making compost is collecting your organic material waste. It is best to use a container with a lid as food waste can have some odor. When the container is full, add the contents to other organic waste in a composter outside.
Here are 5 easy steps to making your own compost:
- Collect fruit peels, egg shells, coffee grinds, and other organic food waste in a container.
- Take a large bucket and put a few holes in it at different places to allow some air flow.
- Put a layer of soil in the bottom of the bucket.
- Add your organic waste to the bucket in alternating layers between wet and dry materials.
- Cover the top of the bucket with wood or plastic to help with the composting process.
Every few days, quickly stir the contents of the bucket to let more air into the decomposing materials. If the pile seems very dry, you can add a little bit of water.
After three months, the pile of decomposing materials will start to form compost. It will appear dark brown, dry, and crumbly, with an odor of earth. If you are unsure of the process of composting home waste, you can also purchase a home composting kit to help.
