How to Clean Your Microwave
Microwaves are extremely handy, but they can get dirty as quick as they can heat up food. Here are some tips for cleaning to keep your appliance in great condition.
Cleaning the Inside of a Microwave
The first step to cleaning your appliance is referring to the owner’s manual for the best advice and safety precautions.
Safety Tip: It is recommended to unplug your microwave before doing any cleaning.
Helpful Cleaning Tips
Remove spilled food and residue as soon as it happens.
Use a cloth and warm water to clean.
For big messes, use a bit of soap or baking soda as well.
Never use abrasive cleaning agents, oven cleaners, steel wool or other tough cleaning materials.
For dried residue and tough food grime, place a bowl filled with 1/2 cup of water and 6 tablespoons of baking soda inside of the microwave. Heat it up for 2 minutes. The steam from the mixture will loosen all of the residues inside of the microwave, which will make it easier to clean. You can also use lemon instead of baking soda for a fresher smell.
Extra Cleaning Tips
For an alternative method of cleaning the inside of a microwave, follow these steps:
Vinegar & Steam Technique
Supplies:
- 2 tablespoons of vinegar
- 1 cup of water
- Lemon juice or oils (optional)
- A bowl
- A toothpick (optional).
Similar to cleaning with baking soda and water, simply fill a bowl with the water and vinegar. Add a little bit of lemon juice or oil if desired.
Microwave the mixture for a few minutes until it boils. The steam produced from the mixture will loosen all of the grime and residues inside of the microwave. Careful when you open the door as the steam and bowl will be hot!
Now, just wipe down the inside of the microwave with a cloth.
