Why does the air conditioner freeze?
When an air conditioner makes ice or even freezes completely, is a typical problem which can happen both in the indoor unit and in the outdoor unit. But, it is in the indoor unit where we usually see it more often.
Symptoms of why an air conditioner freezes
Air conditioners usually give us some symptoms that something is not working properly, but usually, it is only when the real problem occurs that we realize it. Here are some of the symptoms to watch for:
My air conditioner does not throw enough air
A drop in the air flow is indicating something clear, that not enough air is passing through the interior heat exchanger (internal radiator). The vast majority of air conditioners drive (pull) the same air collected from the room where they are installed. So, if the air conditioner freezes this exchanger is plugged to form a layer of ice on its entire surface, avoiding the entry of air into the machine, resulting in a drastic drop in the volume of air expelled.
My air conditioner throws ice or water
Usually when the air conditioner freezes it often gives off pieces of ice and in many occasions these pieces of ice end up entering the indoor fan (impeller – blades) which expels them to the outside while it drives the air to the room. Sometimes the air conditioning throws ice and in others what you can see are drops of water when thawing this ice.
My air conditioner pulls water inside
As we mentioned in the previous point, if your air conditioner gets frost, it is very possible that it causes part of that ice to detach, but another possibility is that it does not throw ice but throws very cold water.
My air conditioner heats up
As there is the possibility that a split indoor unit will freeze, there is also the possibility that the outdoor unit of your air conditioner will freeze. An ice plate in all the exterior is avoiding a good exchange of air in it and therefore lowering and decreasing the performance of the air conditioner.
Noise in the indoor unit
Sometimes there are “crunching” noises in the indoor unit when the ice that accumulates in the machine thaws. This does not always happen, but it is a symptom that the machine tells us that something does not work well, indicating that it is possible the machine is freezing or thawing.
