How can I get burnt plastic off my glass stovetop?

Oh no! I left a plastic container on the stove top. What can I do? Removing plastic from a glass stove might be frustrating, but not impossible. However, in order to use the stove safely again, you must remove the material. The first question is if it is a plastic bag or a bigger piece such as a plastic bowl or lid. There is more than one technique to do it, it all depends on the kind of plastic you must take off your stove. Try one or more of the techniques below.

How to remove plastic off a stove top

For light amounts of plastic, the following techniques will work well.

Baking soda and vinegar:

The most agreeable option for lighter amounts of melted plastic is a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. This is a good technique because it doesn’t create fumes. Warm up the burner slightly, then put some baking soda on the spot and add vinegar little by little until you have a paste. Scrub with a nylon scrubber.

Boiling Water

Some people suggest turning the burner on low in order to let the plastic soften, but this is not recommended because when the burner cools and you are going to scrape it, the plastic will harden again.

Put boiling water on the plastic using a soup ladle. After this, use a rubber scraper to scrape the plastic away. Then, dry with an old rag. You might have to repeat this process a couple of times to get all the plastic off the stove top.

For larger amounts of plastic follow the techniques below.

Ice

When the melted plastic is a big piece, put ice on the coated area. This will allow the plastic to become more brittle. Finally, clean any residue with a nylon scrubber.

WD-40

Before doing this, be sure the burner is cool. You will need WD-40 and a razor blade. Allow a bit of WD-40 to soak into the plastic. Then scrape the melted plastic with the razor blade until it is removed.
